DIVOT DIGGING

Let’s revisit the May 2018 Instinctive Golf Blog Divot Digging. I’ve always been a proponent of ‘brushing the turf’ rather than taking a deep divot for several reasons:

  1. I do not have the muscular wrists and forearms that most professional golfers have.
  2. My intuitive reasoning and understanding about the effects that the physical impact of taking a deep divot has on the bones, tendons, ligaments and muscles of the entire body, especially the more sensitive hands and wrists.
  3. I have NEVER produced an effective golf swing when consciously thinking about ‘hitting down on the ball’ or ‘taking a divot.’
  4. Reading and digesting the emphasis on ‘brushing the turf’ by Percy Boomer in one of golf’s classic books, On Learning Golf, in which he strongly advocates “Sweep the ball away.”

Recently, I read a golf blog by Daniel Lee of Gravity Golf where he writes, “Ever wondered why Tiger Woods, during his peak, never seemed to take divots in the fairway?……Throughout his career, he has stated that the swing that hurt his body the least and feels the best is when he does not take divots and can clip the ball off the turf.”

In conclusion, I don’t think most amateur golfers have the thickness, musculature and strength of most professional golfers, and would benefit from the consciousness of ‘brushing the turf.’

After rereading the May 2018 Golf Blog Divot Digging, I suggest you give it a try – brush the turf, clip the ball off the turf, and “Sweep the ball away.”
